I experience much professional joy using my research and practice-based perspective to support math teaching and learning because I realize the impact that high quality instruction has on student learning. I teach because it is an opportunity to observe growth in people as they encounter challenging tasks.

After receiving my math teaching credential from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1995, I taught high school mathematics in Santa Barbara for seven years before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 2002.

While in Colorado, I pursued my interest in supporting K-12 teachers of math to grow professionally by attaining my PhD in Instruction and Curriculum (mathematics education) from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Working with leaders in math education research, I had the opportunity to design, facilitate and research professional development experiences for teachers through the NSF-funded Supporting the Transition from Arithmetic to Algebraic Reasoning project. Through this work, we developed the Problem Solving Cycle, a model of mathematics professional learning. Additionally, I taught elementary and secondary math methods courses, as well as math content courses for K-12 teachers.

I completed a post-doctoral research position at University of California a Santa Cruz at the Center of Mathematics Education of Latinos/as and then returned to CU Boulder to help develop and teach in a new secondary math/science teacher education program called CU Teach, based on the UTeach model from the University of Texas at Austin.

After returning to Santa Barbara in 2011, I have worked at the Santa Barbara Unified School District supporting K-12 teachers and administrators transition to Common Core mathematics through professional learning communities. I have also taught methods courses and facilitated professional learning institutes for teacher professionals and pre-service teachers at UC Santa Barbara’s Math Project and Teacher Education Program.

Outside of all this professional work, I spend quality time with my wife and our two sons gardening, playing guitar and going to the beach.
